Josef Sinder, Engineering Fellow, Transportation Solutions
In my role, I help inspire early-career engineers and global teams, by providing them with practical guidance in managing different process assignments and gaining a broader view of production and the business.

Josef is inspired by helping others and learning new things. From new technologies and concepts to financial analysis, Josef has a knack for seeing what matters and finding new ways and opportunities to apply it in ways that enable continuous improvement - in people and in processes. When tackling difficult production challenges, he thrives when solving the problem requires him to work on multiple processes across core manufacturing process. To increase innovation adoption on new projects, Josef partners with the product engineering and manufacturing to develop new process capabilities that maximize manufacturing improvements. Through TE's Center of Excellence (CoE) and Manufacturing Engineering, Josef supports global teams in thinking outside the box when developing high-impact solutions around core processes for manufacturing innovation.

Which engineering challenges are you working to solve?

It comes down to increasing productivity in all our core processes: stamping, plating, molding, and assembly. My team is continuously working to reduce downtime while improving production quality. This can mean reducing material consumption during production as well as controlling the needed capital expense spending. To achieve this, we focus on gathering data now available through our IOT-enabled devices. This kind of integration is creating big opportunities.

For example, our Digital Factory Initiative is looking at how machine connectivity can enable us to get more process data from our manufacturing processes. The challenge is that we have a very broad machine base, which includes an array of PLC brands and ages.

So, by relying on data analytics, and increasingly AI and AI Image Recognition as well as autonomous guide vehicle (AGV), we can accelerate and automate our continuous improvement process. AGV has proven crucial for automating material handling.

What is TE doing to enable innovation in manufacturing?

For more than fifteen years, we have driven process innovations and shared best practices through global CoEs, enabling collaboration across business units to enable process improvement and process innovation. For the past decade we have also invested in an internal technical conference that enables us to present insights on innovations happening across the company and provides our engineers with opportunities to network across teams.

Additionally, we manage a rotational program for engineers that enables them to learn new skills and gain insight on entire production lifecycle, so that they can find opportunities to drive innovations.

I am passionate about the creative and technical dimensions of engineering. My background in stamping, plating, molding, assembly and digital factory technology provides me with the process know-how to manage cross-process operations and develop solutions across these processes. At TE, I learned how to develop solutions from very different origins. In my role, I help inspire early-career engineers, by providing them with practical guidance in managing different process assignments and gaining a broader view of production and the business.
