Packaging Waste

Packaging Waste

Packaging Waste

Short Explanation

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) entered into force on 11 February 2025. It introduces mandatory requirements to reduce packaging waste, increase recyclability, and promote reuse across the European market. These rules apply to all companies placing packaging on the EU market.

Regulatory Information

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation 2025/40 (PPWR) builds on previous legislation, such as Directive 94/62/EC and Decision 97/129/EC, which introduced material identification codes to support recycling.

Key changes under PPWR include:

  • Stricter recyclability and design requirements
  • Mandatory reuse targets for specific packaging types
  • Minimum recycled content obligations
  • Clear restrictions on unnecessary packaging
  • Harmonized extended producer responsibility (EPR) rules across the EU

Businesses must ensure packaging is clearly marked, recyclable, and compliant with the new standards.

Our Approach

SUSTAINABILITY

TE Connectivity is fully dedicated to make packaging more sustainable, including
activities which:

  • REDUCE the use of (especially virgin) packaging material
  • REUSE packaging material where possible, based on economic and environmental considerations
  • REDESIGN and optimize our packaging to reduce material weight and CO2 footprint
  • Utilizes RENEWABLE packaging materials where possible
  • Increases REGRIND content of packaging materials in order to reduce consumption of primary raw materials

We have a global Product Stewardship Committee whose aim is to drive efforts that will allow TE engineers to design and manufacture products that are more efficient, more sustainable and more in line with circular economy principles. The committee is cross‑functional effort and includes representatives from our Environmental, Health and Safety; Product Environmental Compliance; Product Development; Research and Development; Procurement; Information Technology and Packaging teams. More information on our product stewardship efforts can be found in our annual corporate responsibility report (www.te.com/sustainability).

RECYCLING MARKING

As well TE Connectivity is committed to meet all legal requirements. The attached TE specification 107-18049 documents the correct recycling marking in compliance with 97/129/EC.
