Overview
Enhance overhead line visibility and help protect birds with our Dynamic Avian Flight Diverters, easily installed by hand, hot stick or drone.

TE Connectivity's AVFD Avian Flight Diverters help utilities reduce bird collisions while protecting overhead line reliability. Installed directly on overhead conductors, AVFDs enhance line visibility so birds detect power lines earlier and safely change direction. This supports wildlife protection initiatives while lowering the risk of asset damage, outages, and maintenance costs across both transmission and distribution networks.

The AVFD portfolio includes two models tailored to different visibility conditions. Our AVFD-HCR incorporates high-contrast, prismatic reflective components that enhance daytime visibility and motion-based detection, even in low light, fog, and adverse weather. AVFD-DY features photoluminescent elements that extend visibility into dusk and nighttime hours, when bird activity is often highest, ensuring consistent performance across changing environmental condition.

Selected AVFD models support drone and hot-stick installation, including on energized lines. This enables faster, safer deployment, reduces outage requirements, and simplifies installation in remote or hard-to-access locations. Engineered for dependable grid performance, AVFDs are tested to be radio frequency interference (RFI) free on overhead lines up to 173 kV, helping ensure network integrity without impacting communications.

FAQ

Question: Can TE Connectivity’s Avian Flight Diverters (AVFD) be installed using drones?

Answer: Yes, the AVFD portfolio includes products designed for drone-based installation, enabling faster deployment while reducing crew risk and service interruptions.

Question: What voltage levels are the Avian Flight Diverters rated for?

Answer: The AVFD product range includes flight diverters, which are tested and radio frequency interference-free for up to 173kV.

Question: How many Avian Flight Diverters are required for effective overhead line marking?

Answer: On typical distribution lines, AVFDs are installed in a staggered pattern across all three phases, with spacing ranging from 2.4 m to 15 m (8 ft to 50 ft), depending on line configuration and local requirements.

Question: How long does the luminescent glow last?

Answer: The luminescent elements typically provide visibility for approximately 10 to 16 hours per day, depending on daylight exposure and charging conditions.

Question: Are AVFD products compliant with REACH and RoHS requirements?

Answer: Yes. All AVFD models are fully compliant with both REACH and RoHS regulations.
