Oils in commercial vehicles are becoming more technical with increased additives that are decreasing oil resistivity and resulting in poor oil conditions. To improve machine condition monitoring, TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity and sensors, has developed the OPS3 multi-parametric oil quality sensor to detect degrading oil. The OPS3 sensor has undergone a deep mechanical design process to simplify manufacturing and to scale the production capacity to meet the increasing market demand.

“Proper oil monitoring is a critical factor in ensuring top performance and mitigating the risk of early system failure in heavy equipment and hydraulic systems,” said Antoine Gilliocq, product manager at TE. “The OPS3 sensor is the first-of-its-kind in the market to offer density, dynamic viscosity, dielectric constant, resistivity (Rp) and temperature measurement all at once giving customers the ability to define their own oil algorithm and bring added value, such as healthier oil that lasts longer and increased engine life, to their systems.”

Designed to have a long lifetime and weighing five times less than others in the market, the OPS3 sensor’s stainless steel 316L housing provides a durable sensor package and EMC robustness making it suitable for harsh environments.

The OPS3 sensor has a threaded adapter fitting M14x1.5 that comes in a standard port size, allowing easy integration and installation of the sensor in on- and off-road vehicles and hydraulic systems. Additionally, with a standard CAN protocol, the OPS3 sensor is SAE J1939 compatible enabling simple communication. It is also equipped with a commanded address that allows customers to modify the source address themselves.
