TE developed an innovative heat shrink termination to support an oil company in the Omani desert who couldn’t afford the stoppage of the oil production.

The Challenge

Withstand harsh environmental conditions

Temperature up to 60°C, high UV level, sand damages and heavy pollution combined together can lead to the premature aging of the oil production equipments. 

An Omani oil company was facing electrical breakdowns due to termination's failures that were only 2 or 3 years in service. 

The Solution

Innovative 33 kV Heat Shrink Termination

Together TE's engineer and customer's team, designed a new 33 kV heat shrink termination with an extra layer of insulation. It allows the increase of the wall thickness of the insulation tube at the bottom end of the terminations, resulting in the significant risk reduction of pin holes.

TE's experts decided to use the EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) material to design the heat shrink terminations. This material has the ideal attributes to withstand desert environmental conditions. Indeed it has a high UV radiation redistivity and a very low degree of surface cracking.
