TE Connectivity (TE), a global leader in connectivity and sensor solutions, announced today its HPF 1.2 interconnection system for harsh automotive applications. The new solution is designed to withstand increasingly high vibration loads associated with modern high-performance engines and ultra-efficient downsized engines.
“Modern combustion engines experience tremendous vibration which is a result of OEM optimization strategies such as greater specific engine power, higher peak firing pressures and engine light-weighting,” said Stefan Glaser, senior manager, customer engineering, Automotive, TE. “We leveraged our deep understanding of contact physics to develop a new terminal design that keeps vibration-induced micro movements away from the connector’s points of contact.”
The new HPF 1.2 interconnection system was successfully tested at TE’s Bensheim Technology Center, where it handled vibration loads up to four times higher than previous electrical connection test specifications defined by AK, the notable German OEM work group. TE used the basic design principles of its existing HPF 1.5 interconnection system to develop the new solution to meet vibration loads as high as 80 g Sinus, occurring in a frequency range between 200 and 2000 Hz.
The new system has a two-part design. Its external box spring ensures a low-friction guidance of the inner contact body. An innovative meander-shaped geometry of this inner body compensates micro movements via a concertina effect. Design features limit the admissible movement of the meander zone to ensure required durability.
The new contact is compatible with the common VDA 1.2 interface. It also is designed for massive flat tab contacts which are widely used to connect engine components. TE also fully optimized all of the system components including the terminal, housing and cable fixture.
TE technologies connect nearly every electronic function in the car – from cloud-connected services and alternative power systems to infotainment. The company is working with industry leaders and notable organizations to develop global industry standards and requirements for in-car networking technology.
TE Connectivity is a $12 billion global technology leader.
