Achieving sustainability goals

Engineers and executives need to align on realistic sustainability goals and a clear strategy for pursuing them.

Many global organizations have prioritized a set of internal sustainability goals to achieve by 2030. However, 70% of engineers think their organization’s leadership is too optimistic about reaching its sustainability goals in that timeframe.

Digging deeper, we can see a reason for this skepticism: There is a disconnect in how engineers and executives feel about their sustainability efforts. For example, executives are more likely than engineers to be satisfied with their organization’s progress on sustainability initiatives and the resources the organization has dedicated to achieving sustainability goals.

If that gap widens, it could lead engineers to further question how realistic the organization’s goals are.

TE Takeaway

“Setting impactful sustainability goals is an important way for companies to be good corporate citizens, but it’s vital that they’re the right goals for your specific business. Identify what is material to your company and evaluate areas where you have the biggest impact on the environment. You can benchmark what your peer companies are doing to focus on sustainability. Many companies report their goals and focus areas annually. Additionally, seek out guidance from organizations/groups like GHG Protocol and SBTi, which can guide you in establishing goals. Once goals are set, companies should reevaluate them regularly to ensure that they remain relevant.”
