Scott Larson, Chief Technology Officer, Medical
We work closely with the customer to become a vital part of their business solution...This helps us identify the crucial problems to solve.

Scott is inspired by TE’s innovations in new technologies for medical devices – and the results these technologies are having on patients. The work that Scott is leading is enabling TE engineers to develop solutions for transformative medical therapies. Conditions long previously treated with pharmaceuticals and highly invasive surgeries are now treated with a new generation of medical devices enabling minimally invasive procedures. For Scott, this kind of truly ground-breaking – and life-saving – advancement is only possible because of the diverse engineering know-how and technical skills of his team, who come to each project with an open mind, for learning from each other and the customer, with a clear commitment to accountability to the patient and integrity to the design. His deep admiration for math and biology and lifelong commitment to learning by doing, propelled Scott toward a career in solving engineering problems for medical technology. At TE, Scott empowers his teams to do, learn, and iterate as the path for making progress reality.

How is your team helping customers develop new medical technologies?

I believe innovation requires close partnerships with our customers. This enables my team to accurately understand the customer's current requirements and proactively anticipate their future needs around new opportunities

We partner with our customers in developing prototypes that allow them to iterate and fail fast. This enables us to move the best design forward. This is crucial in defining timelines that align with the customer’s needs, so we can work to exceed their customer expectations.

We stay close to new medical therapies and developments in both the medical device market and the trends affecting this technology. This enables us to help our customers stay ahead of their competition. It also positions us to move quickly at the customer's pace, thinking big and moving fast around new innovations.

How is TE helping customers innovate around market trends?

We partner with the customer to become a vital part of their business solution. Our team is meeting frequently with the technical leaders of customers and prospects. We help them see options for solving for advanced medical therapies, providing them with samples and taking time to understand what keeps them up at night. This helps us identify the crucial problems to solve.

We put together a Rapid Prototype Group so that we can move quickly to help our customers. This team has the talent and equipment necessary to test ideas early in the design process, which helps the customers see that we are the best partner for them to move forward with.

Which kinds of projects do you find challenging and gratifying?

I’m closely watching the evolution of purely mechanical systems into “smart” devices that provide the physician with access to real-time patient and disease data during a procedure. This technology arms the medical staff with knowledge, allowing them to make better decisions , which could prove crucial during a medical procedure. This technology also promises to improve the overall patient's experience, by enabling physicians to make more accurate diagnoses while also providing faster, less invasive procedures.

Achieving these kinds of outcomes goes beyond the technical side of design and production. It's about partnering with our customers to help save lives and ensure patients recover faster and more comfortably.
