Technology transfer from 12 Volt and high-voltage power transmission
Electrifying a passenger car powertrain by adding a 48 Volt system offers a particularly attractive mix of features. The electric energy harvested during regenerative braking supports fuel saving strategies and reduces CO2 emissions. Additional torque from a 48-volt motor supports a downsized combustion engine during boosting operation. Existing and new high-power electric components can be integrated into a 48 Volt powernet, where they operate at higher efficiency. Finally, stored electric energy can stabilize a 12 Volt power network.
All this comes at a comparatively low price. To begin with, the components are compact and easy to integrate. A 48 Volt DC system is also intrinsically safe according to the ECE-R 100 standard. No costly shielding and protection measures are required. The challenge is that while a voltage level of this magnitude may be safe to the human touch, separating an interconnection under load (= hot unplugging) will result in an electric arc. Another requirement of 48 Volt connector technology is to protect it against electrochemical corrosion. For this reason, connectors and relays must be adapted and/or carefully selected to cope with the higher voltage level.
Based on vast experience with 12 Volt interconnection technology as well as high voltage connectors, TE Connectivity can offer 48 Volt interconnection technology such as HDSCS (Heavy Duty Sealed Connector Series), which complies with the required creep and clearance distance for 48 Volt. TE has developed an exemplary design based on MCON 12 terminal technology. This 2-way connector system features individually sealed cavities to prevent water ingress and subsequent electrolytic corrosion. The design offers the right features at the right cost-benefit ratio, compared to high-voltage connector systems.
