EVC 175 Contactor

Based on the proven technology of TE’s EVC 250 contactor, the EVC 175 contactor features a continuous current of 175A and a short circuit capability of 5kA, meeting medium power requirements. The EVC 175 is ideal for applications on hybrid vehicles, full-battery electric vehicles, fuel-cell cars and DC battery charging systems.

The EVC 175 contactor ensures safe disconnection of overcurrents even at altitudes of 5,500 meters above sea level. Just like the EVC 250 it features high-performance arc suppressing magnets to effectively control the switching arc. The new contactor features a continuous current of 175A and a short circuit capability of 5kA, meeting medium power performance requirements. It does not require inert gas filling or hermetic sealing of the contact chamber, ensuring safe disconnection of overcurrents up to 2kA, even at altitudes of 5,500 meters above sea level. The EVC 175 contactor is ideal for applications in tight mounting spaces, with overall dimensions of only 70.3x50.9x34.3mm and different options for mounting flanges. In addition to the standard version with separate coils for pull-in and hold with an automatic, internal switch, a second version with single coil for external economization is available. The EVC 175 main contactor also fulfills IEC 60664 insulation requirements.

Applications

  • Hybrid vehicles
  • Full battery electric vehicles, fuel-cell cars
  • DC battery charging systems

Features

  • Compact high voltage main contactor
  • Voltage rating up to 450VDC
  • Continuous current up to 175A at 85°C
  • Short circuit carry currents up to 5,000A

Requirements

The requirements for the main contactor under normal operation conditions are summarized here:

  • Connect and disconnect the battery
  • Carry several hundred Amps with low power dissipation
  • Ensure full galvanic isolation, when the vehicle is turned off

The requirements for failure cases are:

  • The contactor must be able to switch off overcurrents of up to 2,000A
  • The contactor must still be capable of separating the circuit after an overload
  • The contacts must remain closed in case of overload (especially at short circuits), as long as the contactor is activated
