Our expertise in laser processing and materials science is hard to beat. We specialize in laser welding, laser cutting, plastic cutting, and ablation, working with numerous types of metal and plastic materials. Our components and assemblies are used in a variety of medical devices including coronary, peripheral and neurovascular devices, stimulation leads, surgical instruments, dental and orthopedic devices.
Femtosecond laser micromachining capabilities are ideal for single-step laser processing of multiple materials in medical device applications. Materials include: polymers, platinum, stainless steel, and nitinol. Femtosecond laser processing enables cutting & drilling of multiple materials at one time (metal or polymer), drilling and cutting of micro shapes, and OD reduction on metal and polymer components & assemblies (e.g., catheters). Custom designed systems are for on- or off-axis work.
Plastic Laser Cutting
Laser cutting plastic is fast, clean, accurate and requires minimal tooling. At TE, we create OD reduction on polymer components and assemblies, drill holes as small as 0.002" or less, and hold tight tolerances of 0.001" or less. We can laser ablate the following materials: silicone-polyimide, polyurethane-ETFE, Mylar polyester fabric-nitinol, PTFE-platinum, and PEBA-gold.
Laser Cutting Metals
TE's precision cutting of materials such as plastic or metal tubing is one of our strengths. Materials that we use for laser cutting metals are: stainless steel, nickel, cobalt chromium, and MP35N. Tube diameters range from 0.009" to 0.250", and tolerances within 0.0005" or less. Kerf widths can be as small as 0.0007". We can process small wall thickness as thin as 0.002" up to 0.030", and process diameter tubing (e.g. 0.012" x 0.009"). Our fast, repeatable process is hard to beat, and our processes typically cost less than machining or EDM methods.
