TE’s connectors and sensors are in virtually every vehicle. They are part of advanced safety systems, engine controls, power management systems, infotainment applications, and hybrid and electric vehicles.

We work with our automotive customers to help limit vehicle emissions. One example is a sensor we created to measure the quality and concentration of urea in systems that reduce the amount of greenhouse gases created by diesel engines. These sensors, and all our products, are put through a demanding testing regimen so they can thrive in the harsh conditions of an automobile.

Vehicles become more technologically advanced with each passing year, and one category that benefits from this is safety. Never before has there been such a demand for vehicles that are not only smarter, but safer.

Working in concert with car manufacturers, TE Connectivity engineers are creating smarter cars that take advantage of car-to-car interconnectivity. One example of this application is that these vehicles will recognize their environment and communicate with other vehicles in the area to alert the driver of hazards, traffic and more.

AEROSPACE

MAKING AVIATION SMARTER WITH SENSORS

The horizontal stabilizer is the most complicated motor on an aircraft and TE’s sensors are helping to ensure it won’t fail. Our innovative sensor solution alerts crews when the stabilizer’s back-up system is engaged.

We collaborated with our aerospace customers on the solution which automates processes, provides timely alerts to pilots and reduces costly downtime for planes. It’s one of our over 40,000 sensor solutions helping to solve our customers’ toughest challenges.

Airplanes have typically used their jet engines to taxi to and from the runway. This consumes appreciable amounts of fuel and adds to the bottom lines of airlines. This also puts a strain on the environment.

TE Connectivity engineers saw a way to save the airlines fuel costs by developing a revolutionary new system to replace jet taxiing. By creating a special cable that can move up to 100 tons on electric power, TE engineers helped push the bounds of what electric power can do—potentially saving airlines millions each year.

SUBSEA COMMUNICATIONS

TE has deployed more than 490,000 KM of undersea cable, bringing faster, more reliable communications systems to people around the world. Our process is vertically-integrated, beginning with optical design, route planning, and the manufacturing of state-of-the-art-cables, amplifiers and transmission equipment capable of delivering up to 80 terabits of data per second. What’s more, our fleet ensures precision and reliability in one of the most challenging environments on earth.

A major consumer electronics manufacturer came to us with a unique problem: They needed a special cable that transmitted both power and data—a custom 2-in-1 solution and they needed it on a very short timeframe for a presentation at Consumer Electronics Show.

TE Connectivity engineers collaborated, employing TE trademark “technology roadmapping.” This allowed TE Connectivity engineers to foresee and address customer needs before they actually requested them, and led to a unique, on-time solution that was perfect for the customer.

CONTACTLESS CONNECTIVITY FOR SMART FACTORIES

Factory environments present tough challenges for connectivity. Dust, dirt, water, corrosion, and vibration all get in the way of the connections that are crucial to maximizing uptime and productivity.

Making Data Centers Faster While Using Less Power

Data centers in the U.S. alone consume the annual carbon footprint of 34 power plants. One way to save data center energy is to dramatically reduce the cooling needs of communication systems, which will subsequently lower overall power use. Our Coolbit optical engines help do just that, offering both speed and efficiency.

This Coolbit optical engine converts data from electrical signals to optical ones, transferring it at up to 400 gigabits per second while consuming only two-thirds the power of similar products. This means that some data centers can increase capacity by 100 times as they decrease power use by 6%.
